Canadian Provinces and their Capitals Bingo template

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

It’s sad.

We’re a Canadian company, yet our first template word list for print-bingo.com was the American State Names. It’s just a fact of life, we always knew that the vast majority of our customers would be from the USA.

Anyway, it’s taken us three or four years to finally put together a template word list to easily create a bingo game with Canadian Provinces and Territories, and their Capitals.

As ever, basic use of print-bingo.com is free; however, you get more features if you upgrade for $10.

Easy Online Credit Card Donations for Canadian Charities

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

A couple months ago, Ed at Plum mentioned CanadaHelps.org to me.  He was researching payment taking options for one of the charities that he works with.

CanadaHelps is a great site that makes it easy for small charities to take credit card donations.   Just this week my sister was looking for a way for a registered charity for which she volunteers to take credit card payments, and this was my best suggestion.

From their own about page: “CanadaHelps, a public charitable foundation (896568417RR0001), is Canada’s only donation portal that provides access to all of Canada’s 80,000 charities, from national organizations like national cancer charities to smaller groups like local animal shelters and soup kitchens. ”

They’ve taken the publicly available list of all Canadian registered charities and pre-populated their website.   Every charity has a generic landing page with the basic information from the CRA, such as name, address, phone number, etc.  A charity can create a login to customize their information to further detail.

All that CanadaHelps takes for accepting a credit card donation and forwarding it to the charity is 3-4% off the top, this is inclusive of all the credit card company fees (e.g. Visa and MasterCard).  All-in-all it’s great for the charity because of costs and ease of use.

Taking credit card payments is not easy, nor free.  For example, our web based revenues from print-bingo.com and PapayaPolls.com are on the margins for where it would justify the effort and cost of getting a merchant account.  Thus, we still use a PayPal account.  We would be lucky to setup a  merchant account with someone like Moneris for less than $50/month, and the discount rate would only be slightly better than we get at PayPal’s – we probably would not get much below 3% as a discount rate. Plus, we would have to spend hours writing our own payment pages.  We keep putting it off.

For a charity with limited time resources and modest expectations of taking donations by credit card, I highly recommend looking into CanadaHelps.org.

Crazy Canadian Coalition Political Bingo

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Politics in Canada are certainly interesting this week!

I’m sure if you’re reading this, you’ve already got an opinion on the matter, I know that I do.  But this isn’t a political blog…

Today, I mark for posterity the insanity of the entire situation with a set of custom bingo cards from our site print-bingo.com. You’re free to use them for a laugh, or maybe to teach a class lesson about the political issues at hand.

So, click here to load our Crazy Canadian Coalition Political Bingo design.

As always, basic use of print-bingo.com is free, but you’re encouraged to upgrade for $10 to get more features.

Comments are always welcome on this blog, but keep it clean and civil.

Thanksgiving Bingo Cards!

Friday, October 10th, 2008

We’ve been quite busy at Perceptus, and our poor blog has been ignored lately.  So, we’ll push out a quick post today.

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

If you feel like celebrating with family by playing some themed Thanksgiving Day Bingo, visit our bingo card generating site, print-bingo.com and print yourself some cards.  But be warned, that list is based on American Thanksgiving, you will need to edit the list a bit to make it truly Canadian – shame on us for not doing it for you, but we’ve just been too busy, sorry.

Also, for our American neighbours: Happy Columbus Day!  No, we don’t have a Columbus Day Bingo theme made this year.  You can create your own, and if you do, please send us a copy, we’ll glady share it and give you credit.

As always, basic use of print-bingo.com is free.  But you’ll get more out of the site with a small $10 upgrade.

PayPal Changes it’s Canadian Pricing

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

I read some good news for small businesses in Canada who use PayPal to receive credit card payments.  The transaction costs have dropped by $0.25.  I’m happy, especially since our print-bingo.com transactions upgrade price for Premium access price is currently $10 so percentage wise, the extra $0.25 has a noticeable benefit on our margins. *

The percentage that PayPal takes also drops if you’ve gone past the 3000 per month bracket.

In my humble opinion, PayPal is now an even better deal for small scale web sites. The threshold where I would spend the time and money to move to a merchant account with a bank just got bumped up by a lot.  I’ve helped set up a “proper” merchant account for a client in the past, and it’s not fun nor cheap.  And programming for PayPal is really nice in comparison.

Also note that the entry level currency conversion for Canadians at 2.5% still stinks.

At Perceptus, we use a US based USD chequing account through RBC Centura where we withdraw our funds in USD.  Then we either convert to CAD with the somewhat better bank exchange rate, or we pay Leonard in USD to avoid exchange costs altogether.

The PayPal blog post is here: http://www.thepaypalblog.com/weblog/2008/06/lowered-fees-fo.html

* Hmm… what’s with that emphasis on the word “currently”?
